What is Calligraphy? And Who is Francesca?

Calligraphy is known as the art of beautiful writing. For centuries the scribe has been a valued person in any community. The beauty of the written word has been prized. Whether as a motto, a quote, a poem, or a Declaration of Independence of a country, the shape and style of the writing has been a treasure.

Beautiful writing has been my passion since childhood. My earliest memories are of scribbling on anything that had a blank space. Holding a pencil or pen in my hand felt natural. When I began to keep a journal in my UNICEF calendar at the age of eight-years-old my writing career was born.

My sixth grade at Parker-Bennett School in Bowling Green, Kentucky was Miss Holland. This frail, gray-haired, petite little lady complimented me on my penmanship and encouraged me to improve. Thus my calligraphy career began. But it wasn't until I was working at CBS News when my colleague Linda Vogel praised by handwriting and bought me my first calligraphy pen and a workbook. God bless her!

Now, 30 years later, I continue to practice and improve my art. My formal training was at the New School with noted calligrapher Jane Wong. I've delighted brides-to-be, party hosts, advertising executives, anniversary celebrants, birthday bash planners and many poetic souls. It is my goal with this blog to offer some wisdom I've acquired as a calligrapher. And it is my great hope that I can help you approach your projects fearlessly, joyfully and creatively!

Anyone can learn calligraphy and if you don't want to learn at least you can improve your own handwriting to address your cards, letters, copy poems of help your signature stand out! I give private lessons than are fun and guaranteed pain-free!
True art is created in an atmosphere of joy and that is the essence of Calligraphy by Francesca!
